| While there is a Fisher House at most every major military health center in the United States, there is not one in the South Florida/ Miami-Dade County area. The newest Fisher House is in Tampa co-located with the James A. Haley Veterans Hospital, one of four polytrauma centers in the US. In 2006, in light of the onset of operations in Afghanistan and Iraq, the Fisher House Foundation and VA recognized the need for additional Fisher Houses to support our Service Members, Veterans and their families. The Miami VA Healthcare System was chosen as a recommended site for a new Fisher House. The Miami VA Healthcare System treats over 55,000 veterans every year with more then 6,000 inpatient admissions and 565,000 outpatient visits each year.
The Miami VAHS has enrolled over 3,400 veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan for medical care. Annually, over 400 military and veteran families have been required to expend personal funds to stay in local area hotels in order to be with loved ones during illness and rehabilitation. This money is not reimbursed by any US government agency. Extremely limited emergency grants are available but difficult to obtain.
